Silicone Treatments for Nonwovens, 1993 Nonwovens Conference Proceedings

Silicones are a unique class of materials which are typically characterized by properties such as their low surface tension and thermal stability. These properties allow silicones to be used in the Nonwovens Industry in a number of areas including:

(1) As process aids such as lubricants, antifoams, release agents, polymer melt additives or wetting agents.

(2) To deliver a silicone to a surface from a nonwoven web.

(3) To modify the surface properties of a nonwoven web.

The objective of this paper will be to discuss the advantages of using silicone in each application with emphasis on the hydrophobic and hydrophilic treatments and their effect on the nonwoven web.
