Meeting Forming Fabric Needs as Fiberglass Mat Machine Speeds Increase, 1993 Nonwovens Conference Proceedings

W. E. Houfek

As the future need for more fiberglass mat capacity becomes greater, the mat producers will have to make a decision whether to install additional machines to increase the speed of existing machines.

While there will be many issues to address as machine speeds increase, forming fabric design will certainly be a key one. Fabric properties that will need to be considered are abrasion resistance, drainage, fiber retention, web release, and dimensional stability. In addition to forming fabric changes, the need for better preventive maintenance will be greater than ever. Each of these key issues will be discussed separately, with recommendations made on how to overcome them as machine speeds increase. Better communication between fabric suppliers and their customers will be essential so that critical needs are met in the future.
