My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
Robert M. Kell, Norbert E. Stawicki
The purpose of this study was to achieve higher tear strength in fiberglass mats used for roofing. The method chosen was to investigate the effectiveness of vinyl acetate based modifiers for the urea-formaldehyde resin that is the main component of the mat binder. An experimental design was used to evaluate both structural and compositional factors. Significant improvement over existing products was achieved by incorporating functional groups that react with the U-F resin.
