My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
The present U. S. Army battle dress overgarment (BDO) acts as an insulator resulting in heat stress to personnel when worn in a desert climate. There is a need for a lighter-weight, thinner, more air-permeable, yet highly adsorptive BDO for desert climate. The purpose of the study was to develop and test a laminate as an alternative to the existing U. S. Army BDO. The paper discusses 1)development of the laminates, 2)the method used to evaluate the resistance of the activated carbon loaded laminates to penetration by a chlorinated organic compound, and 3)results of a matrix of tests conducted on the laminates. The results discuss a typical break-through curve, breakthrough times for both types of carbons and laminates, and evaluates the problems experienced by the laminate construction. These carbon loaded laminates can be an effective
barrier for adsorption of organic air pollutant.
