Upward wicking test procedures cannot be accurate or sensitive means for comparing in-plane absorption capabilities because of certain uncontrollable factors that interfere with the process. These factors are discussed in detail. An alternative

approach is described, which produces reliable data that can be used to determine permeability, capillary pressure, and uptake capacity from a single series of in-plane flow measurements on thesamespecimen.
