My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
Maureen Dever, Roberto S. Benson, Nancy Fair
Water soluble nonwovens are specialty materials that may provide some solutions to environmental concern regarding disposability of our solid wastes. These materials may also be used in specialty applications such as water soluble laundry collection bags for linens soiled with body fluids in institutions and hospitals. A water soluble melt blown material was made of partially hydrolyzed (88% hydrolyzed) poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVOH). The rate of water solubility was modified using two different chemical treatments. The first method to reduce the rate of water solubility of the pure PVOH nonwoven as a post-treatment. Both methods reduced the rate of cold water solubility of the pure PVOH melt blown material.
