My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
D. B. Allen, J. P. Rust, I. Shalev, R. L. Barker
This paper outlines the development of novel mechanical stylus surface analysis (MSSA) instrumentation used to measure surface characteristics of soft tissue paper products. Development and integration of mechanical stylus, appropriate data acquisition hardware, and novel application software is outlined. A review of surface analysis technology is provided along with an evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the more common types of systems. An evaluation has been made of the applicability of the various technologies to this project, and justification for the selection of mechanical stylus technology is given. Surface softness indicative properties of tissue are identified, discussed and shown to be well suited to measurement by mechanical stylus technology.
