My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
Wayne T. Davis, Catherine Cornell, Maureen Dever
A variety of residential air filters are commercially available including the standard fibrous mat filters which have been used for years as well as recently developed filters which incorporate electrostatic fibers (electrets) to enhance particulate removal and carbon-impregnated filters to enhance removal of organic vapors. In this study, eleven different commercially available filters were evaluated to determine their characteristics and the particulate removal efficiencies of the filters in the range of 0.5 to 4.0 µm. The 50.8 X 50.8 cm2 (20 X 20 in2) filters were evaluated in a simulated home heating systems at velocities of approximately 450 to 750 fpm to determine their initial efficiencies prior to loading. An optical particle counter with a multi-channel analyzer was used to simultaneously measure the concentration of particles in six particle size increments.
