In the fabrication of spunbond or meltblown nonwovens, resins are melted and homogenized in a single-screw extruder before molten fibers can be formed. To obtain proper product properties, a resin of specific attributes, such as melt flow rate, additive package, molecular weight (MW) and molecular weight distributions (MWD), etc. is selected. In addition, the extrusion system has to be of proper design to deliver the quality melt for steady fiber formation. The process stability, production rate, energy consumption and process flexibility of the production systems strongly depend upon the resin characteristics and the extrusion system design.
