Thermally bonded laminates having cotton and ramie cores with outer layers of melt blown and/or spunbond webs have been developed at TANDEC for use in medical and personal hygiene products. In this research, inner webs of cotton have been used to take advantage of the unique properties of this natural fiber. Outer layers of melt blown (MB) and/or spunbond (SB) webs were used which served as binder fibers in the thermal bonding step. The MB and SB cotton based laminates have been characterized for their functional properties. Laminates having higher cotton content were evaluated for towels, wipes, wound dressings, and personal hygiene applications. As the cotton content increased, wicking and absorption capacities of the laminates increased.
