Phase change or “hot melt” ink jet technology has been an emerging offshoot of the ink jet industry for about the last 15 years. The biggest attribute of this printing method is that final print quality is relatively independent of substrate type or quality. The technology has been commercialized for ink jet marking systems, for office printing applications (particularly color) and for large format printing. This paper is an overview of the ink and print heads designed for this application, the commercial uses for the technology, and how this growing segment of the printing industry might affect paper manufacturers.
