New Ultra-Low Formaldehyde Styrene Butadiene and Vinyl Acrylic Binders for Nonwoven Markets, 1992 Nonwovens Conference Proceedings

New regulations from OSHA, passage of the Clean Air Act and California’s Proposition 65 have brought tighter restrictions on the permissible level of formaldehyde in the workplace, the labeling of products containing formaldehyde, and the release of formaldehyde to the environment. Now, more than ever, latex binders are needed which do not contain the formaldehyde-releasing monomer which is customarily used in self-crosslinking latexes to meet performance requirements. The paper describes newly developed ultra-low formaldehyde styrene butadiene (S/B) and vinyl acrylic latex binders that perform as well as conventional, formaldehyde-producing latexes. The binders vary in softness and can be used for numerous nonwoven applications including wipes, filter-media and coverstock.
