The increased awareness of the hazards of toxic substances has stimulated growth in the use of chemical protective clothing. As usage has grown, so has the sophistication of chemical protective clothing technology. Reinforced elastomer fabrics are being replaced by light weight, less expensive, high performance composites made from lightweight barrier films and high strength nonwovens. These composites not only provide high levels of chemical barrier, but also am strong and durable. The patent literature illustrates how this technology has evolved.
