A primer on the three categories of membranes (microporous, ultrafilter, and reverse osmosis) used for filtration and separation applications are briefly compared and contrasted. The microporous membranes used for submicronic filtration are given greater emphasis. The important filtration parameters of retention, permeability and throughput are used to explain the advantages of a graded pore or asymmetric structure compared to conventional isometric microporous membranes.
