An attempt has been made to determine trace amounts of formaldehyde released from durable press finish treated cotton fabrics using the headspace gas chromatographic method. Often the amount of formaldehyde released in the gas phase is very small and is below the sensitivity limit of the flame ionization detector with a methanizer. To overcome this limitation we have used a photoionization detector with a 11.7 eV lamp and have been able to detect formaldehyde at a fraction of a ppm level in the gas phase. Sorption eqilibrium of formaldehyde in cellulose plays an important role in the amount released to the environment. An attempt has been made to determine the distribution coefficients for different fibers used in textile and nonwoven products.
