Standard test methods for predicting resin or binder performance on fiber type products involves formation of handsheets or dog bones. Neither method is conducive to rapid preliminary evaluation of a series of resins or binders. A simplified test method for the evaluation of urea formaldehyde (UF) and phenol formaldehyde (PF) resins has been developed. Glass fiber filters were soaked in diluted resin solutions and cured at various temperatures and times. Properties that were measured are stillness (Taber Stiffness Tester) and tensile strength (Instron). The effects of formaldehyde to urea ratio, cure time, cure temperature, and the use of catalysts were studied. In addition, a comparison with PF resins is presented.
