Raw Stock Bleaching of Cotton for Nonwovens, 1995 Nonwovens Conference Proceedings

Carole L. Reaves

Barnhardt Manufacturing Company

An overview of the challenges and requirements of kier bleaching cotton in raw stock form is presented. Cotton types such as #1 high mic, comber, motes, and linters, are in demand by the nonwovens industry for the manufacture of such products as cotton tipped swabs and pound rolls. Although all available types of cotton are similar, the challenges of differing micronaires, trash content, and heavy metal contamination are always present and are discussed. Prior to its use in a medical end-use product, cotton must be chemically treated. The scouring and bleaching steps in the chemical treatment are discussed, using hydrogen peroxide as the bleaching agent. And finally fiber finishes are discussed, as the nonwovens industry has its own set of specialized requirements for cotton processing.
