Most mills experience some form of microscopic organisms in their white water loop. We usually refer to these microscopic creatures as slime. When mills close up their water systems problems begin. Slime in the machine system can cause holes and odors thus reducing the quality of the mat. Often the greatest cost of slime-related problems is lost production due to holes in the mat sheet and unscheduled down times for sheet breaks. Due to lack of oxygen, anaerobic bacteria will form and this will cause corrosion and odor. The buildup of hydrogen can cause corrosion of stainless steel and other metals.
