Feather fiber is the product from clean sanitized feathers after removal of the quill. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy(NMR) can differentiate between fiber and quill fractions based on their different physical and chemical properties respectively. In the development of processes for the physical separation of fiber and quill fractions and the extraction of the fiber from within the resulting mixture, these methods enable tracing the distribution of fiber and quill components upon mechanical processing to select for fiber product and to optimize yield. For fractions with similar microcrystalline and chemical properties, macroscopic shape differences enable fractionation.
