Needlepunched Treated Cotton Fibers With Enhanced Absorbancy, 1996 Nonwovens Conference Proceedings

Scoured/bleached cotton fibers were treated with formulations of polyethylene glycol (PEG), resin and catalyst over a wide range of add-cuts. A PEG of molecular weight 1000 and an alkylated dimethyloldihydroxyethylene urea resin were used. Prior to testing, fibers were carded into batts then needlepunched. The resulting nonwoven fabrics were evaluated for rate of water absorbency, water holding capacity and selected physical properties. Fabrics made from treated fibers were compared with untreated controls as well as treated fabrics finished in fabric form. Advantages of finishing fibers before formation into nonwoven fabrics will be discussed.
