The rheology of a formulation is a critical property which can affect the processability and quality of products produced by the textile, paper, and nonwovens industries. Rheology modifiers are often added to obtain the appropriate rheology for specific formulations and application methods. In this overview, the properties and thickening mechanisms of associative and alkali-swellable rheology modifiers are discussed. Practical examples are given to provide both a greater understanding of rheology and synthetic rheology
