Modeling of the Next Generation of Melt Blowing - Part II, 1996 Nonwovens Conference Proceedings

In part 1 a mathematical model for melt blowing was described. This model was used to understand and optimize the melt blowing process. In part II, this work is expanded. We are using the model in conjunction with novel die head modifications. Specifically, we are using the model to suggest both (a) the new die modifications, and (b) the optimum conditions under which we should run these modifications. A particularly exciting modification has been the use of air pulsation in the die. For example, in a typical slot die, the air can be directed first to the one side (slot) of the die, and then to the other. Frequencies of 1 to 50 Hz work well. As a result of this pulsation, 10-30% less air is needed to produce the same size of fiber. (See U.S. patent No. 5,405,559, April 11, 1995.)
