Though nonwovens can be quite strong, they are surprisingly easy to deform and damage by handling. This damage may result in bagginess, camber or layflat problems. Also, the product may display an uneven bulk, caliper, or loft. This paper shows how to detect and measure web bagginess, as well as some typical sources of permanent deformation including nips, misaligned rollers and certain machine components. Finally, we discuss the loss of bulk, due to Z-direction pressures as the web traverses over bars and rollers, into nips, and into wound rolls.
