Study of the Needle Punched Fiber Transfer, 1997 Nonwovens Conference Proceedings

A theoretical study combining processing parameters and fibrous structure geometry was carried out and validated by experimental measurements in order to predict the fiber orientation distribution of various needled nonwoven structures. The determination of the fiber volume fraction along the Z direction, VFz , was the focus of the study. This one is expressed as a function of processing parameters, needle parameters and fiber-needle barb orientation. According to the needling process used in this study, it is shown that the actual VFz lies in a range defined by a lower and upper limits. The range dispersion is about 1.7. Experimental determination of VFz was carried out by Image Analysis to verify VFz predictions.
