This paper discusses the use of an image analyzer system for characterizing products, solving problems and investigating materials and items that affect processes. This includes yarn and fabric analysis, dyeing and soiling, filters for aerospace applications, sewn seam puckering, pilling, fabric squareness and its consequences, tennis ball quality, abrasion and performance characteristics and other items. The application of an imaging system and software is virtually limitless but is dependent on the system and software used, proper choice and use of lighting, optics, statistical methods and to a large degree to the skill and knowledge of the operator.
