Effects of Selected Variables on VOC Emissions of UF Bonded Nonwoven Roofing Mat Material, 1997 Nonwovens Conference Proceedings

Concerns over emissions from the curing of UF resins on Roofing Mat Material are increasing. This study investigated the affects of 5 process variables on formaldehyde and ammonia emissions as well as their affect on strength properties in the manufacture of this product. The variables investigated were resin mole ratio, resin solids, binder solids, cure time, and cure temperature. These variables were evaluated using a two level half fractional factorial experimental design that permitted determination of primary effects and two variable interactions.’ The primary effects and two variable interactions are quantified and the trade between emissions and mat properties are discussed.
