Resols: The Right Resin for the Right Job, 1997 Nonwovens Conference Proceedings
It is very confusing to non-chemists (and to some chemists) as to which resin system works universally best for all types and grades of paper. Since there are many applications of paper products, this article will concentrate on resins used in paper for filters and, more specifically, for lube oil filters. Other applications will be mentioned as the need arises to illustrate a point. Resin systems partially discussed are: resols, novolacs, isocyanates and latexes. Since many volumes of books exist on the chemistry and uses of each of these, only enough simplified chemistry will be used to illustrate significant performance points. Dynamic Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) will be used when appropriate to relate these chemistries to performance. Pleat memories at high temperatures and relative porosities are related to these chemistries.
