Advances in Low Formaldehyde Binders, 1997 Nonwovens Conference Proceedings
Emulsion polymers used for adhesives, binders, and coatings applications emit chemicals to the environment during their preparation, application, and use by the consumer. In particular, formaldehyde emissions from cross linking systems has come under increased regulation. Alternate systems will be presented which offer adhesive, binding, and tensile strength properties that are equal to or better than properties from existing high formaldehyde emitting polymers. Measurement of these formaldehyde emissions by 2,4-DNPH derivation and HPLC analysis at room temperature and oven cure temperatures show significant decreases to 20% or less of values from standard products with only slight increases in cost.
