My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) is gaining popularity as a tool for decision-making related to industrial systems. Efforts in the development of the LCA methodology have led to agreement on several aspects of procedure for conducting an LCA. This procedure includes documentation of the goal and scope of the assessment, the performance of an inventory of materials and energy associated with the system, and an assessment of the potential impacts associated with these inventory items. More detailed aspects, including specific data and modeling requirements, remain a source of discussion among LCA practitioners. Through consensus on methodology and metrics, the application of LCA will highlight opportunities for the protection of human health and the environment in conjunction with the continuous improvement of industrial systems.
