My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
High speed photography was used to measure fiber motion below a melt blowing die. The resultant data were then subjected to statistical analysis, and it was found that the fiber distribution at any planc is well-described with a bivariate normal distribution. This distribution produces an elliptical laydown pattern at the collection screen. Also, neither of the two axes of the ellipse are parallel to the die slot axis - i.e., the ellipse axes are rotated at an angle relative to the axis of the die slots. This angle is a measure of the interdependence of fiber motion in orthogonal directions in a plane.
