Melt blown PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) nonwovens are known to have high levels of shrinkage (over 30% shrinkage of the original length) especially when exposed to temperatures well over the glass transition, T, of the polymer (above 90 deg. C). This paper is focused on explaining the shrinkage of PET melt blown fabrics using a three-phase model instead of a traditional two-phase model utilizing thermal analysis techniques. The effect of incorporating different nucleating agents, organometallic such as sodium benzoate, polymeric such as a liquid crystalline polymer either alone or in combination on the shrinkage characteristics of melt blown fabrics is illustrated. Finally, the effect of varying different process parameters such as throughput rate, air pressure at the die, die temperature, air temperature and the die-to-collector distance on the shrinkage of the webs is explained.
