Automotive Air Induction Filtration Systems (AAIFS) should be designed to deliver superior performance levels for optimal engine protection. In addition, it must also meet packaging requirements, higher flow rates, lower system restriction, serviceability and induction noise. The ingested contaminant size and concentration levels need to be controlled to reduce engine wear. Major air filtration technologies in AAIFS, currently available and used on passenger cars, light/medium duty trucks and SUVs are presented along with performance data. Criteria for selecting Air Induction Filters (AIF) have been discussed along with engineering and design parameters required for developing robust AAIFS.
