Recent Developments in Automotive Cabin Air Filtration, 1999 Nonwovens Conference Proceedings

Automobile cabin air filters have become standard equipment on many European and US car models. Initially, only particulate filters, which reduce the concentration of particulate matter, have been introduced. The second generation of cabin air filters has an ability to reduce not only a concentration of airborne solid contaminants, but also gaseous pollutants as well. These filters provide additional improvement of vehicle interior air quality, and are gaining popularity in luxury car lines.
This paper describes the current state of cabin air filtration. Filter media, filter structures and mechanisms of particulate and gaseous contaminant removal are discussed. A review of typical filter performance requirements and challenges associated with them are also provided.
