Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a very powerful technique for the characterization of fluid distribution and diffusion in nonwovens. This was demonstrated on a polypropylene nonwoven geotextile. Pore structure was determined from image analysis of 3D magnetic resonance images. Pore size distributions determined from MRI were compared with that determined from capillary flow porosimetry. Self-diffusion coefficients of water were measured and also used to estimate average pore sizes. Fluid-specific imaging of a multicomponent fluid (mineral oil and water) was conducted; the fluid distribution was described according to the distribution of total fluid or the distribution of individual components.
