With 2,000 new homes being built on a daily basis in the United States, new construction alternatives should always be explored. In the residential and commercial roofing industry, fiberglass mat is the substrate of choice due to its tensile strength, dimensional stability and improved fire retardancy. In glass mat production, urea-formaldehyde resins are typically used as binders for the glass. Many times latex dispersions are included in the formulation to give the glass mat certain enhanced properties that UF resins cannot achieve alone. This paper will explore various chemical binder systems available with respect to critical performance criteria for glass mat applications.
