The development of filtration media is a very complex undertaking. It requires the formulation of different fibers and resin systems to meet different requirements. There are many different variations resin systems such as phenolics, epoxy, polyvinyl acetates, ethylenevinyl acetates and acrylic resins on the market today. The aforementioned may be blend with other materials to create certain characteristics needed for an application. All of the above materials have advantages as well as disadvantages. We have chosen to study four different types of media and resin systems used in the filtration industry today. The samples evaluated were a solvent based resol phenolic system, nonphenolic system, novlack/resol blended phenolic system, and a water-based novlack based system.
