An image analyzer can be used to rank the ASTM D3512 photographic pilling standard accurately. However, the derived equation could not accurately rank pilling in actual fabrics due to construction or textural effects in the fabrics being highlighted. Unwanted highlighted textural effects were eliminated using a derived algorithm consisting of pill area and major axis breadth / major axis length ratio. The algorithm to identify pilling and the resulting equation relating image analyzer pilling rank with the ranking obtained visually by a panel of individuals visually, was able to achieve excellent correlation.
