High-loft perpendicular-laid textiles are usually made from synthetic fibers. This paper discusses high-loft perpendicular-laid fabrics made from cotton and compares their compressional and thermal insulating properties with those made by the conventional cross-laid technology.
Perpendicular-laid textiles show higher compressional resistance than cross-laid textiles. Size (diameter) of the fiber plays a significant role: cotton fibers (being fine) do not provide high compressional resistance in high-loft fabrics. This can be considerably remedied by both perpendicular layering and admixing a small amount of coarse synthetic fibers.
