Evaluation of the Physical Properties of Polyester (PET)-Glass Mat Blends, 1999 Nonwovens Conference Proceedings

We have studied the effects on several of the physical properties of added polyester (PET) in wet laid glass mats. The purpose of this study was twofold. First, we wanted to establish some fundamental, preliminary data for such blends as a guide for future work and second, we wanted to identify some beneficial properties that synthetic fibers may impart to glass mats. The results indicate that there is an increase in the tear and bursting strength and a decrease in air permeability and tensile strength of PET/glass mat blends with increasing levels of PET. These results can be explained when one considers the physical and chemical differences between glass and polyester.
