Three years ago the wet formed fiberglass mat industry realized the need to actively meet with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to negotiate a fair standard on VOC for this industry. Industry meetings were held to establish a consensus opinion and a series of meetings ensued with EPA. This resulted in a proposed regulation scheduled for publication in December 1998, which establishes VOC emissions and clean air standards for the fiberglass mat industry. The regulation is based on actual industry operating parameters and product mixes with a minimum of intrusive paperwork, data collection and unnecessary documentation. The work to accomplish this was through the Building and Industrial Mat Committee of TAPPI at a minimum cost to industry, no consultants, no extensive analytical testing and no legal staff or fees.
