Hows and Whys of PC Based Control, 2000 Process Control, Electrical & Info. Conference Proceedings

Dave Gee--Manufacturers and OEMs are continually being driven to reduce costs and improve quality. Automation systems have a substantial impact on these imperatives because they directly affect manufacturing productivity. Traditionally, either proprietary (PLC and/or DCS) solutions or custom hardware/software solutions have controlled automation systems. PC based control technology now offers the reliability and functionality of the traditional equipment with capabilities that allow substantial productivity gains. This paper explores the economic motivations behind the move toward PC based controls. It also discusses the capability and characteristics of PC based controls.
