My TAPPI Story: Rory Wolf
TAPPISAFE
Timothy F. Murphy, Shih-Chin Chen, Rick Palumbo--During paper grade change, without proper coordination and control, the entire paper machine process can have radical fluctuations and produce significant amounts of off-spec paper. In the worst case, a sheet break can occur which could result in significant production loss while re-threading the paper machine. The production loss and the effort required to recycle off-spec paper are very costly. A key cause of production loss comes from paper machine transient dynamics, which is the result of a large speed change of the machine. To address the issue, research has been conducted to investigate the transient dynamics of paper machines during a grade change and effective control techniques are applied to reduce production loss from paper grade change. This paper presents the issues of grade changes from our investigation and the results of applying new grade change control strategies.
