Medium Voltage Three-Level, NPC Inverters and Their Application as Paper Machine Wet End Drives, 2000 Process Control, Electrical & Info. Conference Proceedings
David Loveridge--Medium voltage drives are gaining more acceptance within the pulp and paper industry. Traditionally, applications have been limited to large fans for boilers and the occasional fan pump. Three-level inverter technology has made available high performance medium voltage drives suitable for coordinated drive applications. This paper will describe the theory of operation of a three-level, neutral-point-clamped (NPC) medium voltage coordinated AC drive system suitable for use on paper machines, where sectional power requirements are stretching the limits of traditional low voltage inverter technology. The material cost of two low voltage drive systems and a medium voltage drive system for a typical paper machine wet end will be compared.
