On Detection and Classification of Valve Stiction, 2000 Process Control, Electrical & Info. Conference Proceedings

Krister Forsman--We describe and compare different ways of detecting whether a control valve has excessive friction, using process data from normal operations. The friction problem, also known as stiction, causes different behavior in different types of control loops. The main contribution is a number of empirical observations, showing that valve stiction can cause a wide range of patterns in process data, not only the classical square wave – triangular wave constellation. The loops studied here include flow loops, both with compressible and incompressible media, and level control loops. The dynamics of these processes differ substantially, and there is currently no general method available for automatically detecting valve stiction in all cases. The problems are illustrated with real world data.
