Predictive Emissions Monitoring for a Paper Mill Power Boiler, 2001 Process Control, Electrical & Info. Conference Proceedings

Robert R. Horton, Lysette H. Shuman--This paper describes the installation of a Predictive Emissions Monitoring (PEM) system for a paper mill power boiler. The PEM system offers several advantages over traditional hardware-based Continuous Emission Monitoring (CEM) systems including lower cost, better reliability, and reduced maintenance. In this installation, the NOx emissions from a natural gas-fired power boiler are predicted in the boiler’s DCS control hardware, taking maximum advantage of existing sensors and control hardware. Results show that the emissions predictions are within 5% relative accuracy when compared to certified reference methods.
