Emergency Replacement of a Paper Machine Line Shaft Drive Turbine: A Case History Utilizing a Single Speed AC Motor, 2001 Process Control, Electrical & Info. Conference Proceedings

Timothy O. Jensen, P.E.and Thomas O. Trueb, P.E.--The #2 Paper Machine at Sappi’s Skowhegan, Maine Plant started up in September of 1986. It is a 300 inch wide coated free sheet paper machine driven by a 450 foot long lineshaft. Powering the lineshaft is a 4500 horsepower steam turbine. Due to an electrical power failure in 1996, the machine’s lineshaft over-sped and substantial damage occurred to the turbine’s rotor and stator. This paper describes how five weeks of paper machine downtime were avoided by replacing the turbine with a 4000 horsepower electric motor.
