Ponderay Newsprint successfully started up their greenfield facility in November 1989. The mill has two thermomechanical pulping lines and a 330 inch wide Newsprint machine. The start up of the millwide system with over 2800 loops, proceeded well ahead of schedule and the mill is presently producing better than 600 TPD. This paper emphasizes the importance of mill personal being involved in the design and development of a millwide control system from conception through implementation. The design philosophy is reviewed, along with the DCS interfaces to PLC’s, field instrumentation and motors. The advantages of using "smart" field devices to speed up calibration and check out are discussed, and the insights gained from the total project are analyzed.
