Using Optimization Tools to Improve Mill Performance, 1993 Process Control, Electrical & Information Conference Proceedings

The quality of the performance of modem DCS systems degrades over time. Managers are often not aware of this degredation or the impact on production efficiency and product quality. The move toward increased continuous operation makes preventative maintenance increasingly difficult. A solution to this problem is the Loop Tuning Process, which includes a loop by loop physical checkout, analysis of bump test data to optimize PID control, and Time Series Analysis of performance data to characterize performance and check for minimum variance. Performance data and statistics saved to a data base also provides a system of good performance for future reference and ISO9000 compliance. The Loop Tuning Process not only improves performance but provides a tool for on-line preventative maintenance.
