The MIS and Process Control Departments at Georgia-Pacific’s Brunswick plant have worked together to create a Millwide Information System. Brunswick management’s decision to form and support a team from both departments has been paramount to the overall success of the project.
The integration of control computers and "mainframes" or business computers must be engineered and installed by staff members from both groups to be managed properly. Process Control brings process knowledge and real time mentality to the project, while MIS supplies computing power, business know-how, and the discipline necessary for sound data management.
Cultural hurdles, inter-departmental politics and territorial attitudes must be overcome, and a team spirit has to be instilled in group members.
