Evolution to Manufacturing Execution Systems, 1995 Process Control, Electrical & Information Conference Proceedings

Carol Jackson and Dr. J. P. Kennedy

of Oil Systems, Inc.

The evolution of data collection in the mill environment has evolved long past the DCS data collection software, past the millwide data collection and assimilation to the Manufacturing Execution System (MBS) architecture. The MBS use process information and plant information to automate manufacturing business processes and the decisions that effect the process. Mills must migrate away from the legacy systems and begin building application modules that are linked as an integral part of the MBS design. Instead of having a distinct set of software modules (lab data entry, maintenance and planning, safety and OSHA documentation, process data historian and environmental reporting systems - to name a few) as was the old design, companies need to create systems that can evolve as the applications advance. This paper will discuss the role of a data historian, such as PIrM supplied by Oil Systems, Inc., and other software components of an information network to support the MES model.
